MINÉR. Aluminate naturel de magnésium, variété de spinelle. On appelle (...) ceylonite la [variété] verte (A. PÉRÈS, Les Pierres et les roches, 1896, p. 41).
Prononc. Dernière transcr. (ceylanite) ds GATTEL 1841 : cé-la-ni-te. Étymol. et Hist. I. Ceylanite 1793 (LAMETHERIE, Journ. de phys., p. 23 d'apr. HAÜY, Traité de minéralogie, Paris, t. 3, 1801, p. 17). II. Ceylonite 1892 (GUÉRIN). I dér. du nom de l'île de Ceylan, au Sud-Est de l'Inde, où l'on a trouvé cette pierre; suff. -ite; II soit dér. de Ceylon, nom angl. de cette île avec suff. -ite, soit directement empr. à l'angl. ceylonite « id. » (1884 ds NED).
